Ben Wa balls & kegel weights: a beginner’s guide
Ben Wa balls have a reputation as a pleasure product, a fitness product, or both — and honestly, they can be either. Here’s how they actually work.
What they do
Weighted balls (or eggs) are inserted vaginally, where the body naturally works to hold them in place — that gentle, ongoing engagement is a passive form of pelvic floor exercise. Some people use them purely for that strengthening effect; others enjoy the subtle internal sensation of movement during everyday activity.
Start lighter than you think
Heavier isn’t better, especially at the start — a lighter weight that you can comfortably hold and remove is the right starting point. As your pelvic floor strengthens, you can graduate to a heavier set.
Single vs. graduated sets
A graduated set lets you progress from lightest to heaviest over time, which suits most beginners better than committing to a single fixed weight.
Using them safely
Always choose a set with a retrieval cord or loop, use plenty of water-based lube for comfortable insertion, and don’t wear them for more than a few hours at a time. Clean thoroughly before and after each use.
